We are made up of three teams: the Art Direction Team, the In-House Illustration Team, and the Illustration Project Management Team. The In-House Illustration Team mainly focuses on drawing, while the Art Direction Team\u2019s main job is acting as a bridge with external production companies and other divisions, as well as reviewing their illustrations. The Illustration Project Management Team is a specialized team that centrally manages project schedules. It also handles project management to ensure the Art Direction Team and the In-House Illustration Team can operate smoothly.<br><br>Since hololive has a large number of talents, the volume of illustrations we need to produce is enormous. In order to maintain overall illustration quality, the Illustration Production Division possesses the capabilities to manage illustration orders with external production companies and review their work, as well as to draw illustrations in-house, which is a key feature of the division. Currently, about 25 members are working in the division.<\/p><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>\u2015 What kind of illustrations does the division specifically create?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-liquid-speech-balloon liquid-speech-balloon-wrap liquid-speech-balloon-148\"><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-avatar\"><\/div><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-text\"><p>We are involved in nearly all illustration production for every project led by COVER, including event key visuals, matching outfits for large-scale projects, merchandise illustrations for pop-up shops, and talents\u2019 new outfit designs. Could you tell us about the respective day-to-day responsibilities of the Art Direction and In-House Illustration Teams?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-liquid-speech-balloon liquid-speech-balloon-wrap liquid-speech-balloon-146\"><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-avatar\"><\/div><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-text\"><p>The Art Direction Team members start their day by checking the priorities of their current tasks and sharing their schedule for the day within the team. After that, most of their time is spent communicating with external production companies, internal divisions, and our talents. They sometimes draw rough drafts for new outfits themselves, but primarily act as directors.<\/p><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-liquid-speech-balloon liquid-speech-balloon-wrap liquid-speech-balloon-150\"><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-avatar\"><\/div><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-text\"><p>The In-House Illustration Team members dedicate most of their day to drawing. With seven members at this moment, the team handles about 30 projects a month, with each member simultaneously working on three to five projects at any given time.<br>We handle a wide variety of requests. We sometimes even receive a direct request from a talent asking \u201cI want this creator to draw for me.\u201d For talent-led premium merchandise production, the project often begins with mutual trust between our creators, which has become a huge motivator for the In-House Illustration Team.<\/p><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>\u2015 With roles clearly defined within the division, is there anything you always keep in mind when facilitating cross-team collaboration?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-liquid-speech-balloon liquid-speech-balloon-wrap liquid-speech-balloon-148\"><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-avatar\"><\/div><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-text\"><p>Regarding the schedule, we stay aligned with the Illustration Project Management Team. Sometimes our teams work together on the same project, and other times they work independently. What we place particular importance on is our quality review system. For projects outsourced to external production companies, the Art Direction Team usually reviews such creative work, but when it comes to illustrations created by the In-House Illustration Team, senior members of the team take care of the review. Since they are fellow creators from the same team, they can pick up on subtle nuances and maintain the creative purity of the work.<\/p><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>\u2015 How do you decide which illustrations to handle in-house and which to outsource to external production companies?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-liquid-speech-balloon liquid-speech-balloon-wrap liquid-speech-balloon-148\"><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-avatar\"><\/div><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-text\"><p>External production companies have a deep pool of creators capable of handling diverse artistic styles as well as strong execution capabilities. They are indispensable partners who provide essential support for our projects. On the other hand, the advantage of having an in-house art team lies in its close proximity and speed, which enable us to co-create artwork while promptly aligning our perspectives. For instance, for large-scale projects such as EXPOs and live performances, the Illustration Production Division is involved right from the early stages of concept selection. This approach enables us to pursue a consistent worldview as an organization and tackle more challenging projects.<\/p><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-liquid-speech-balloon liquid-speech-balloon-wrap liquid-speech-balloon-146\"><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-avatar\"><\/div><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-text\"><p>Having in-house art directors and illustrators is a huge advantage, since they can quickly translate an idea into a rough draft and evaluate whether our fans will love such a direction. By developing prototypes through close internal collaboration, we are able to direct projects with greater clarity when outsourcing them to external parties. Ultimately, this leads to improved precision and speed across all projects.<\/p><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"From_Original_EXPO_Illustration_Production_to_New_Outfit_Review_Striving_to_Be_a_Reliable_Team_For_Our_Talents\"><\/span><strong><strong>From Original EXPO Illustration Production to New Outfit Review: Striving to Be a Reliable Team For Our Talents<\/strong><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>\u2015 We heard that the Illustration Production Division created the key visuals for \u201chololive SUPER EXPO 2026,\u201d starting with its outfit designs. How did you carry out the entire process?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-liquid-speech-balloon liquid-speech-balloon-wrap liquid-speech-balloon-146\"><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-avatar\"><\/div><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-text\"><p>In line with the concept of \u201chololive time-warp,\u201d the main theme of EXPO 2026, the division handled everything from outfit designs to art direction. We divided responsibilities by outsourcing drawing tasks, including the creation of backgrounds, to our external partner and handling outfit designs and the review process in-house. First, I created the base outfit designs, then assigned other required tasks to each Art Direction Team member, before finally reviewing all the artwork. I think being able to immediately share that kind of knowledge with someone sitting right next to you is one of the unique strengths of our internal team.<\/p><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>\u2015 During the drawing process, how did you collaborate with the external production company?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-liquid-speech-balloon liquid-speech-balloon-wrap liquid-speech-balloon-148\"><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-avatar\"><\/div><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-text\"><p>We outsourced some of the illustrations, including the backgrounds, to our external partner company. We asked them to provide three pose ideas for each talent, and we also worked closely with other divisions to refine every detail of their work. It was thanks to our partner company that we were able to pull the project off with such high quality. In the end, we received wonderful feedback from both our talents and fans, making the project highly rewarding for the team.<\/p><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>\u2015 What do you value most when creating illustrations for talents?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-liquid-speech-balloon liquid-speech-balloon-wrap liquid-speech-balloon-150\"><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-avatar\"><\/div><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-text\"><p>The In-House Illustration Team doesn\u2019t have many chances to directly communicate with talents themselves. That\u2019s why it is important for us to closely follow their activities, such as their daily streams, 3D live performances, and original songs, to thoroughly understand their worldview; so much so that many of our team members have talent streams on in the background while working on their tasks. In particular, their anniversary live performances and music production are important reference material, as they strongly reflect what they really want to do. For example, even if a request simply says, \u201ca cute outfit,\u201d what the talent means by \u201ccute\u201d could be a pretty touch, cute with stylish elements, or something more likely to get a laugh. Our role is to understand their unique personality behind those words by continuously observing their daily activities.<\/p><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>\u2015 Such feelings and attitudes toward each talent help you get chosen by them, right?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-liquid-speech-balloon liquid-speech-balloon-wrap liquid-speech-balloon-150\"><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-avatar\"><\/div><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-text\"><p>That\u2019s right. For talents I have worked with for a long time, I sometimes create illustrations that reflect their specific preferences beyond their public image; for example, although a talent\u2019s official model looks mature, the talent may actually prefer cute, anime-style designs. I primarily communicate with them through other divisions, but when I hear they were really happy with my final illustrations, I feel a strong sense of accomplishment knowing my interpretation of their wishes was correct.<\/p><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>\u2015 In contrast, I heard that the Art Direction Team works in direct communication with the talents.<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-liquid-speech-balloon liquid-speech-balloon-wrap liquid-speech-balloon-146\"><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-avatar\"><\/div><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-text\"><p>When producing new outfits, we hold meetings with the talent and directly exchange ideas and align our perspectives via online chat to refine details. For example, we present multiple design ideas and let the talent choose the one they like, or at times, we directly reflect their requests, such as \u201cI would like to combine this element with that one,\u201d into the design. Through continuous dialogue, we sometimes notice a latent preference that hasn\u2019t been articulated, and as we present several design variations, the team gradually builds up a shared intuition that the talent will definitely choose a particular design.<\/p><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-liquid-speech-balloon liquid-speech-balloon-wrap liquid-speech-balloon-148\"><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-avatar\"><\/div><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-text\"><p>Once our work has earned their trust, they sometimes express their wishes to work with us again, consulting with us on creative content other than outfits. This is the greatest reward for us. As they continue to take on new challenges every day, our goal is to remain the creative partner they can confidently rely on when they face difficulties, so they think, \u201cI\u2019ll be in good hands if I leave it to them.\u201d<\/p><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>\u2015 How do team members communicate and share knowledge with each other?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-liquid-speech-balloon liquid-speech-balloon-wrap liquid-speech-balloon-146\"><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-avatar\"><\/div><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-text\"><p>For the Art Direction Team, weekly meetings are not just for sharing progress. They also serve as a space to discuss any production concerns or minor decisions we are unsure about. All of our team members are conscious of creating an open atmosphere where we can share even the slightest concerns or feelings of uncertainty without hesitation.<\/p><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-liquid-speech-balloon liquid-speech-balloon-wrap liquid-speech-balloon-148\"><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-avatar\"><\/div><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-text\"><p>I also believe that the foundations of this approachability lie in the strong bonds among our members. They often spend their free time together going to see movies, traveling, or showing up to events that another member participates in as a hobby. As they have built trusting relationships outside the workplace, they can exchange honest, candid feedback with each other daily. Our strong teamwork is definitely one of our strengths.<\/p><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-liquid-speech-balloon liquid-speech-balloon-wrap liquid-speech-balloon-150\"><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-avatar\"><\/div><div class=\"liquid-speech-balloon-text\"><p>The In-House Illustration Team holds a meeting to share deliverables once a week. We share key approaches and improvements we implemented while showing not only finished work but also screenshots of work in progress. Recently, this meeting has gone beyond our daily operations, and an increasing number of members voluntarily give presentations on knowledge they have gained or cutting-edge 3D rendering techniques they learned in classes taken outside the company. This has created a positive cycle in which everyone proactively contributes to raising the team\u2019s overall skill level. For some projects, one member might draw a rough sketch, and other members might step in to help with line drawing and coloring to finish the piece together. Since the In-House Illustration Team values each member\u2019s unique artistic style, those providing help need to adopt the main creator\u2019s style.
